Job description

ABOUT US

Founded in 2019, Ocean Bottle is a brand dedicated to positively impacting the world, built on the power of collective action and imperfect sustainability efforts. We have shipped hundreds of thousands of units across the world and formed partnerships with renowned brands from all walks of life. We have also collected 16,743,322 kg of plastic whilst simultaneously improving the livelihoods of the communities we work with. With a focus on diversity and our impact pillars of Ocean Health, Social Good, Closing the Loop, and Climate Action, our aim is to prevent the equivalent of 7 billion plastic bottles from entering the ocean by 2025.

Born from Ocean Bottle, we have recently launched our new proposition, Ocean Co., which is the world's first ocean health platform, committed to restoring, protecting, and securing the well-being of the ocean. Our goal is to connect individuals and brands worldwide with the ocean's prosperous future, through plug-and-play solutions. Using our technology platform, our community members are provided with immersive education, measurable impact, real-time traceability information, and inspiring field stories. By combining education and action, Ocean Co. strives to ensure a healthy and sustainable ocean for the benefit of all.

Together, Ocean Bottle and Ocean Co., are united in a joint mission to combat ocean plastic and promote environmental and social justice.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We’re looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our New Product Development (NPD) team. This role will support our engineering efforts for the new range of products. Reporting to our Head of NPD you will play a crucial role in driving our sustainability initiatives forward. Your primary focus will be on advancing our use of sustainable materials within our products while also supporting the project management of other ongoing projects.

This is a full-time, 6-month fixed term contract.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Your core areas of focus across the organisation will be:

  • Mechanical design development for existing and future products. The output of your work will be measured by how confidently we can quantify how well our products perform. How we can take our physical products and communicate them in numbers, and help our suppliers use the same approach in production.

  • Testing method development through to new design support. Before we can improve our new products, we first need to understand where our current products stand in the drinksware category. The work from test design, to performance measurement to suggested design improvements is all linked and will help us push our products' performance even further.

  • Functional design. Each of our products will have some challenging mechanical design to navigate, from how tightly a thread needs to be twisted to achieve an effective seal, to surviving drops onto hard concrete. The longevity of our products and their performance is inherently tied to these fundamental design decisions. This requires a thorough understanding of design principles to help us improve our future products.

  • Specification control & designing with respect to manufacturing tolerances. When working from the list of features a product has, and turning these into a more technical specification, we need to help our supplier understand why these figures are important and help them measure these during production. This way we can be confident our products will always perform as expected even through the variations in tolerances that typical manufacturing processes experience.
